You ask an AI assistant to rewrite an email, explain a bill, or summarize a personal document. It feels like a private conversation—but what happens to that information after you press send?
AI chat privacy depends on the service, your account, and your settings. Providers may store conversations, use eligible content to improve their models, or review certain chats for safety and other purposes. Turning off model training does not automatically stop storage or every other use of your information.
You can make more informed choices by checking three things: what gets saved, what can be used for training, and who may access it.
Privacy policies checked October 30, 2026. This guide focuses on consumer accounts; workplace accounts and specialized features can follow different rules.
What happens when you send an AI assistant a message?
Imagine you paste a complaint letter into ChatGPT and ask it to make the wording more professional. The letter includes your name, address, account number, and a description of the problem.
OpenAI explains that, depending on your settings, content used for model improvement can include your messages, the assistant’s responses, and uploads such as images and files. That means the details inside a document matter just as much as the question you type above it. OpenAI’s consumer data guidance explains these uses.
For that complaint letter, consider replacing personal details with placeholders such as “[customer name]” and “[account number].” You can add the real information back after you finish editing.
Training, memory, and storage mean different things
Privacy settings are easier to understand when you separate their purposes:
| Term | What it means | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Model training | Using eligible content to improve an AI model. | Can you opt out, and are there exceptions? |
| Memory | Using saved information to personalize future responses. | What does the assistant remember, and can you manage it? |
| Retention | How long information remains in the provider’s systems. | What happens when you delete a chat or use temporary mode? |
In ChatGPT, memory and training are separate controls. Turning off “Improve the model for everyone” also leaves saved conversations in your history. ChatGPT’s data controls explain the distinction.
One privacy switch rarely answers every privacy question.
How ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude compare
For ordinary consumer chats, these are the main controls to review:
| Assistant | Model-improvement control | Temporary or incognito chats |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Personal Free, Plus, and Pro workspaces have data sharing enabled by default; users can turn off “Improve the model for everyone.” | Not used for model improvement while temporary. A copy may remain for up to 30 days for safety. |
| Google Gemini | Keep Activity affects whether future chats are used for model training. Feedback has separate rules. | Not used to train Google’s AI models; retained with the account for 72 hours. |
| Claude | Consumer users can choose whether to allow model improvement. Safety-related uses and feedback have separate provisions. | Not used for training; retained for 30 days by default. |

Temporary mode can reduce some uses of a conversation, but temporary does not mean immediately erased.
Can a person review your AI conversation?
Human review is a separate privacy consideration.
Google says a subset of Gemini chats is reviewed to improve its services, and chats may also be reviewed for safety and security. Conversations sent to service-provider reviewers are disconnected from the account, but reviewed chats can remain for up to three years—even after you delete your activity. Safety-related review can still occur when Keep Activity is off.
That is a reason to remove unnecessary identifying details before sharing something sensitive.
Does paying for AI give you more privacy?
A paid subscription does not automatically settle the question.
ChatGPT Plus and Pro are personal plans with consumer training controls. OpenAI says content from ChatGPT Business and Enterprise workspaces is excluded from model training by default. Managed workspaces can also have organizational retention and access policies.
Before buying a subscription for privacy, check the exact plan’s:
- Default training policy.
- Retention and deletion rules.
- Organizational access controls, if applicable.
- Rules for connected apps and outside services.
For example, information sent through a ChatGPT GPT action follows the recipient’s privacy policy. That service may retain it beyond ChatGPT’s temporary-chat period.
Five steps to take before your next upload
- Remove information the task does not need. Replace names, addresses, account numbers, signatures, and other identifiers with placeholders.
- Review the whole file. Check comments, screenshots, extra pages, and spreadsheet tabs for details you did not intend to share.
- Check your account and settings. Confirm which workspace you are using and review training, memory, and retention separately.
- Use temporary mode when appropriate. Read its limits before relying on it for sensitive material.
- Check feedback rules. A thumbs-up or thumbs-down can have privacy implications. OpenAI says the associated conversation may be used for training when you submit feedback; Anthropic also describes separate storage and training provisions for feedback.
Common questions about AI chat privacy
If I turn off training, are my chats deleted?
No. In ChatGPT, saved conversations remain until you delete them or an applicable workspace retention policy removes them. Archiving a conversation also leaves it stored.
Does deleting a chat immediately erase every copy?
Not necessarily. OpenAI generally schedules deleted chats for permanent deletion within 30 days, with exceptions for content already de-identified and disassociated from your account, or information retained for security or legal obligations.
Does deleting the conversation also delete an uploaded file?
Check whether the file was saved separately. OpenAI says deleting a chat does not delete a separately saved file in Library or Space; that copy requires separate deletion.
One action to take today
Open the privacy settings in the AI assistant you use most. Check training, memory, and retention individually, then review the next document you plan to upload.
A useful question to ask before sending it: Does the assistant need these personal details to help me?
